The Nitpicks of Throwing

The “C- Grip”

Having the appropriate softball grip can make a huge difference during your throw. It allows the ball to follow a direct path, achieve its maximum speed, and it makes the catch easier for whomever is receiving the ball. The appropriate grip is known as the “C-grip.” Training yourself to routinely grab the softball in this way will get you one step closer to perfecting your throw!

The grip is fairly simple. Locate the seams on the softball that look like a “C.” Now place your four fingertips along this seam, while your thumb should intuitively end up on the back seams of the softball. Do not entirely place the softball in your palms, the softball should be effortlessly held by your fingertips. Now the ball can roll off your fingertips so you have control over the softball. Once you understand the “C-grip” concept, without looking, place the ball into your glove and practice finding the grip with your hands.

Arm and Hand Positioning

Positioning of the arm and hand during a throw may sound fairly simple but you would be surprised how many players ignore this step. Ignoring this step can cause to side arm throwing, an issue many softball players struggle fixing. To prevent this, create an L with your throwing arm, and lift your arm parallel to your shoulders. Now get ready for the hard part…

Flip your wrist so your palm is facing away from you. Yes, it is that easy! This allows you to flick your wrist during your throw rather than just pushing the ball to your target.

Follow-Through

This step is major for preventing arm injuries! It also puts speed behind the ball but that’s just a plus. Health always comes first! Once you have finished snapping the ball to your target, finish your throw by bringing your arm across your body and ending at your hip opposite of your throwing arm. There is a great drill that isolates your legs so you can focus on your follow-through. Watch this video to find out!
